Graduate Students
I am a third-year graduate student in the Cognitive Science department studying auditory perception and development. I’m especially interested in the perception of environmental sounds, and how we conceptualize auditory signals. Prior to graduate research, I completed dual undergraduate degrees in Brain and Cognitive Science at the University of Rochester, and Applied Music (Viola) at the Eastman School of Music. In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, sewing, and spending time with my husband, Warner, and my cat, Bobson. If I could be any animal, I would be a goat.
Hello! I am a fifth year graduate student in the Cognitive Science department working on multimodal communicative behaviors in infant-mother dyadic interaction together with Gedeon Deák. I research how mothers attenuate their speech according to infants’ vocalizations and gestural/hand actions, and how this relates to later infant language and communicative outcomes. In my free time I love to learn about plants, languages, and movie trivia! You can reach me at bkarshal@ucsd.edu.
I’m a 3rd year PhD student working on infants’ joint attention development. I’m interested in studying the emergence of joint attention, the effects of contextual variables on infants’ attention-following, and how joint attention relates to language development. During my free time, I enjoy ballet dancing, hiking, and playing the guitar.
I am a PhD student working on triadic interactions, micro-level mother-infant interactions and infant sensorimotor decoupling. I am also interested in basic level categories and infant directed speech, as well as working memory and reinforcement learning. In my free time, I like traveling, boxing, and playing with my cat Cillian (who enjoys boxing too).

Julia Atto
Email: jatto[at]ucsd.eduHi, I am a fourth year student majoring in Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience, planning to graduate Fall 2024! I do content type coding to analyze the linguistic input infants receive from their mothers, for content classes including sentence types (commands, questions, statements), lexical content (object and infant names, etc.), and discourse types. I am particularly interested in language and motor development, and plan to pursuing a career in brain disorders research. During my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, cloud watching, and reading!
Amber Kao
Email: amkao[at]ucsd.eduHi! I’m a 4th year cognitive science and linguistics double major working on the VET project with transcription. I’m very interested in language development as well as atypical language, and am planning on getting a master’s in speech-language pathology after graduation. Outside of academics, I enjoy reading, crochet, and watching all manner of variety shows.
Cynthia Wang
Email: yuw141[at]ucsd.eduHi! I'm a 4th-year double major in cognitive science (design and interaction track) and applied math. I’m currently working on a project on joint attention in early cognitive development, where I analyze and clean data on extraneous motions in mother-infant interactions, to explore how these behaviors capture and redirect infants' attention. During the COVID-19 pandemic I participated in a project that sparked my interest in biostatistics, and I hope to pursue it further in grad school. My hobbies include reading, playing video games, watching movies, and occasionally writing.
Matthew Young
Email: mayoung[at]ucsd.eduI’m an undergraduate majoring in neurobiology and minoring in psychology. I am a part of the Joint Attention team, investigating the effects of extraneous motions during triadic interactions between a caregiver and an infant. In my free time, I like to compose music, play the violin, design board games, and write stories. I’m really interested is studying harmonicity and why we prefer some musical chords over others.
Zhuohao Yuan
Email: z8yuan[at]ucsd.eduHi! My name is Zhuohao and I am a 3rd year cognitive science (specialization in language and culture) and philosophy double major. I am working on the Auditory Development project with the goal of studying people’s development of sound categorizations. I'm interested in how people solve complex problems, particularly how our innate reasoning (a priori) interacts with acquired knowledge (a posteriori), such as artificial intelligence and language, to tackle challenging issues. During my free time, I enjoy logical puzzles, watching movies, and spending time with my cat!

Arianna Girmai
Email: agrimai[at]ucsd.eduHello! My name is Arianna and I majored in human biology. In the lab I worked with the VET team to transcribe vocalizations from mother to infant or infant to mother. My interests outside of lab include but are not limited to: watching movies, playing games, and listening to music.
Abby Harmatz
Email:aharmatz[at]eduHey, my name is Abby and I am a 3rd year majoring in Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience. I am currently in the Auditory Development project in which the team is studying how people categorize sounds across time. I am interested in pursuing a career in research but am not sure which path I would like to take under research. Outside of the lab, I enjoy watching shows with my roommates and exploring what San Diego has to offer.
Hyoser Jo
Email: h1jo[at]ucsd.eduHello, my name is Hyoser and I majored in Cognitive Behavioral Neuroscience. In this lab, I worked as the MAC team's coder, which is the team investigating mother and infant's interactions during free play. Outside the lab, I enjoy play games and taking photos of beautiful scenery.
Julia Kempf
Email: jkempf[at]ucsd.eduHi! My name is Julia and I graduated as a Cognitive & Behavioral Neuroscience major with a Global Health minor. I worked on transcribing mother-infant interactions and toy play. I am currently interested in the biotech industry or a career in neuroscience that allows me to work with patients and be a part of the research. In my free time, I love to work out and hike, go to bakeries and absolutely raid their pastry selection, and collect shells and/or rocks at beaches with friends.
Angela Liu
Email: ajli[at]ucsd.eduHi! My name is Angela and I worked on the Joint Attention project, looking at the aspects of a joint attention episode between infants and their caregivers. In 2024 I completed an honors project based on that study. As of now, I’m interested in pursuing a PhD, hoping to do more research in child development, to better support families with children with atypical development. Outside of the lab, I enjoy going on walks, baking, and coffee shop hopping!
Hi! My name is Shan, but I go by Sandra, and I graduated in cognitive behavioral neuroscience and design and interaction. In the lab, I worked on video coding in the MAC team and am interested in pursuing a degree in speech-language pathology in the future. Outside of school, I like to run, watch movies, and try to get better at ceramics.
