• Mu sources originated in left and right sensorimotor cortex, based on age-matched head models.
• Children showed suppressed power in the mu (7–9 Hz) and beta (15–18 Hz) ranges when watching their parents’ actions.
• Children’s mu suppression during action observation was qualitatively adult-like in all known properties.
